For The First Time In 23 Years The Chevrolet Camaro Will Be Manufactured In The USA!

With General Motors recent announcement we welcome back home to the United States the production of the all new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro!

Ever since the 4th generation Camaro was released in the early 1990's this iconic car has been manufactured in Canada. This will all end when General Motors rolls the last 2015 Camaro off the assembly line at the Oshawa, Ontario plant on November 20th, 2015. When the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro goes on sales in the fourth quarter of 2015 it will be made in Lansing, Michigan. This shift in production is part of General Motors $5.4 billion dollar package of investments they'll be making in U.S. operations over the course of the next three years. This is great news for the Motor City area that has seen a horrible economic downturn in recent decades. First General Motors will invest $175 million dollars upgrading the Lansing plant to accommodate production of the new Camaro there. The all-new 2016 Chevy Camaro's are built on the same platform as the Cadillac ATS and CTS luxury sedans which will also produced in Lansing, Michigan.

“With this investment in tooling and equipment, we will continue to do our part to build on the high-quality reputation of this iconic car,”

-Scott Whybrew, GM’s manager of North American manufacturing

Other General Motors Investments

GM so far has committed $2.8 billion dollars of the $5.4 billion to several projects across the U.S.. The biggest of all is the $1.2 billion dollars GM has spent to upgrade the Roanoke, Indiana where the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup trucks are made. General Motors is also investing $439 million dollars into the Bowling Green, Kentucky plants where the Chevrolet Corvette is made. A large portion of this investment goes towards installation of Japanese made Fanuc Robots.

1,000 Canadian Jobs Lost

Taking the Camaro manufacturing operations away from the Canada plant will cut 1,000 jobs. The plant's remaining workforce of 2,600 will continue producing the Cadillac XTS full size luxury car, the Chevrolet Impala full-size sedan, the Buick Regal mid-size car and the Chevrolet Equinox compact crossover SUV. General Motors is still in negotiations with Unifor, Canada's largest union. These negotiations will determine the future General Motors Canadian manufacturing operations. GM has not yet committed of the $5.4 billion dollars to it's Canadian operations which are just north of Detroit.

“We knew it [losing the Camaro] was coming but it doesn’t make it any easier when it gets here. The timing of it – with the $5.4 billion in the U.S.. – the timing could have been better for sure. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will continue to manufacture the Dodge Challenger at the company’s Brampton, Ontario, factory."

-Unifor president Jerry Dias

The Mustang is the only one of the three iconic American muscle cars that has never been produced outside the United States. The Ford Mustang is currently made in Flat Rock, Michigan. Before that it was produced in Dearborn, Michigan; Edison, New Jersey; and Milpitas, California. Way to go Ford with keeping Jobs in America!
